The Hague, NL
The first ever World Peace Flame monument was inaugurated on 18 April 2002 in The Hague.
The Monument stands outside the Peace Palace, home of the International Court of Justice and an important symbol of international cooperation and unity. The inauguration was attended by the Mayor of The Hague, Irene van Lippe-Biesterfeld, Dr. Mansukh Patel, Savitri MacCuish, and several hundreds of people from around the world. Two years later the magnificent World Peace Flame Pathway was built around the monument, with contributions from every independent country of the world.
The City of The Hague is very honoured with the arrival of the World Peace Flame. The 20th century witnessed the most terrible wars of all times, but also the birth of important international peace organizations of which many are now residential in The Hague. However, the responsibility for peace is not only theirs. Every one of us is responsible. I express the hope that the World Peace Flame will add to that awareness. Dr W J. Deetman, Mayor of The Hague
